Rachel is off this week, but we have a very special guest on Moveable Feast -- Christopher Kimball, of Cook's Illustrated Magazine and the television show America's Test Kitchen. The famous chef sits down with me for a sneak preview of his upcoming visit to the Pantages Theater, and reveals the joys (and occasional perils) of a live cooking show.
We asked him how the live version of America's Test Kitchen differs from the one we see on television:
"The audience talks back... you can't do that on my TV show! You can throw things at me, you can hiss, you can boo, you can laugh... it's all about the audience. It's less about me, and more about them, so I like to talk about what people do when they get our recipes home, and what they don't do. It's actually pretty funny, we have lots of experience about what people don't do. There's a lot of back and forth... it's half-audience, half me."
We also asked him about some of his most memorable cooking 'imperfections':
"Well, we learned quickly that cooking in real time in front of a real audience is like watching paint dry. So we do a lot of things, we do some demonstrations, we have some people come up and do tasting... we do some science experiments on stage. But we try to keep it focused. A ten-minute recipe onstage is just going to put everyone to sleep, so we found other ways to demonstrate what we do — through video, through audio, through some live-action — take you inside the Test Kitchen, but in a way that's entertaining."
Christopher Kimball takes the stage of the Pantages Theater in Minneapolis on Nov. 4th and 5th to host "America's Test Kitchen Live."
