Moveable Feast: Artful Travel

Here's an idea: next time you're on vacation, skip the selfies and record your memories on pen and paper instead.

That's what one local artist couple — Ken and Roberta Avidor — like to do, and their recent travels are featured in the September issue of Minnesota Monthly.

The Avidors live in a loft in Union Depot in St. Paul, and they bought some cool folding bicycles that enable them to take car-free vacations by bus and train.

They sketch everything they encounter. In Duluth, they hit the classics, including Leif Erickson Park, Fitger's, the Aerial Liftbridge, and a little beached-boat-turned-seafood shack called Crabby Ol Bills (where Rachel once had her lunch stolen by a flock of seagulls).

Pipestone, in southwestern Minnesota, is named after red quartzite stone that Native Americans have long quarried to make ceremonial peace pipes — the rock outcroppings are beautiful and the stone is also on several buildings downtown. The weekend that the Avidors visited, the city was holding its annual Paranormal Festival (coming up next month).

The Avidors also spent time in Sioux Falls, and while many people might consider it just a pit stop on the way to the Black Hills, it's actually a very nice town. It sits on the banks of the scenic Big Sioux River, and it has plenty of culture — including a quirky medical museum and an outdoor sculpture walk.

And in the spirit of their hometown, the Avidors also caught the St. Paul Saints playing the Sioux Falls Canaries.
