Vanska eager for new Minnesota Orchestra season

Osmo eager for season to begin

The Minnesota Orchestra begins its new season this weekend with a program heavy on variety, including works by Mozart, Copland, Barber, Hindemith, Respighi and Broadway numbers from soprano Audra McDonald.

Music director Osmo Vänskä says that with all of the turmoil of the lockout in 2013 – 2014, and the "rushed" season of last year, the orchestra is eager for this season to begin. "I feel that this is the real good, whole season without any shadows or anything else," he says. "I say this because we had a really short time a year ago to put the program together for a new season. And right now, this is little bit more normal. And there's a great spirit inside of the orchestra, and people are playing really well and I think we all know why we are on stage.

"We want to show this attitude to the audience members also and to the radio listeners," Vänskä continues. "And so the Minnesota Orchestra is doing very, very well and very strongly and I'm really enthused about the new season."

Brian Newhouse hosts our live broadcast of the Minnesota Orchestra's season opener Friday, Sept. 11, at 8 p.m., on Classical MPR.
