Moveable Feast: State Fair

Moveable Feast: State Fair

Each year, the list of new State Fair foods is a bit of a mixed bag. There are some delights, such as sweet-corn ice cream; some novelties, like the pig's ears; and some downright atrocities, like the grossly overpriced chocolate-dipped raw jalapeño (of which we will never speak of again).

This year is no different. In terms of being the most reliable, Midtown Global market vendors Rabbit Hole and Hot Indian Food are splitting use of one stand. They have a track record of good eats — roasted pig tail for the daring, samosas for the less daring.

Blue Barn, operated by the Blue Plate Restaurant group, is doing a meatloaf hash (with what may be the first béarnaise sauce to grace the fairgrounds), a northern pike Shore Lunch, and for dessert, Grandma Deb's Snicker Bar Salad (one of those Midwestern salads that's not really a salad, like the infamous grape "salad"). This one is made with chopped candy bars, Granny Smith apples, vanilla pudding, whipped cream, and caramel.

In other dessert news, Izzy's is making coffee-brown-butter ice cream for the Hamline Church Hall, which sounds great, and hopefully you'll be able to find it at the shop after the fair. Much more promising than the vanilla ice cream topped with corn-chip crunch and Sriracha, or the dreaded bacon-and-jalapeño combo that has resurfaced in the form of ice cream!
