The Guthrie's Charming 'Music Man'

On the banks of the Mississippi, the Guthrie Theater brings River City to life in a new production of the classic musical, 

It's the Guthrie's first production of Meredith Willson's comic masterpiece, and the first time in Minneapolis for the two stars of the show, Stacie Bono as Marian (the librarian) Paroo, and Danny Binstock as Professor Harold Hill, the Music Man himself.

They're having no trouble bringing this magnificent music to life, so we brought them into Classical MPR to hear them sing, and to explore how shadowy charisma and bright hope meet and mingle in this most American of musicals.

Guthrie Theater - The Music Man

John Birge has been hosting, producing and performing classical music for more than 25 years. Since 1997, he has been hosting on Minnesota Public Radio's Classical Music Service. He played French horn for the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestra and performed with them on their centennial tour of Europe in 1995. He was trained at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Eastman School of Music and Interlochen Arts Academy.
