Angelo Badalamenti to return as 'Twin Peaks' composer

When it was announced that the cult classic TV series Twin Peaks — which originally ran on ABC from 1990 to 1991 — would return for new episodes on Showtime, the first question was: will David Lynch be back? The answer, after some back-and-forth negotiations, is yes; and fans of movie and TV music will be happy to learn that the answer to their first question is also yes. Composer Angelo Badalamenti will also return, to score all 18 new episodes.

Badalamenti's jazzy, dreamlike original music — composed in collaboration with Lynch — was essential to defining the tone of the original series and its 1992 spin-off feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Some of the musical motifs were drawn from singer Julee Cruise's 1989 album Floating into the Night, written by Badalamenti and Lynch.

Beyond Twin Peaks, Badalamenti is best-known for his work on other Lynch projects including Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. Also returning to Twin Peaks are a number of cast members — including Kyle MacLachlan as Special Agent Dale Cooper and Sheryl Lee as the late Laura Palmer and her doppelgänger cousin Maddy Ferguson.

The news of Badalamenti's involvement came in a recent Q&A with Lee and fellow cast member Sherilyn Fenn. Watch:
