Morning Glories: The Minnesota Orchestra

This week, the Minnesota Orchestra writes another chapter in its history as it travels to Cuba — the first U. S. orchestra to do so in many years. On Morning Glories, we'll share some highlights from the Orchestra's history, as we build look forward to this week's concerts, which we will bring to you, live from Havana.

Monday

Mahler: Symphony No. 1 (conclusion)

We'll set the Wayback Machine to 1940, when this symphony was recorded for the first time, by the then Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra — a still-vivid recording that is now in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Tuesday

Chávez: Sinfonia India

The Orchestra has had some famous guest conductors over the years — in this case, no less than Aaron Copland, leading music by his friend Carlos Chávez.

Wednesday

Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture

This sonic spectacular was the best-selling classical record of the 1950s.

Thursday

Ravel: Alborada del Gracioso

When the Orchestra moved from Northrop to Orchestra Hall, their first recording was of Ravel. That set turned out to be one of the highlights of their discography, which has never gone out of print.

Friday

Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 (conclusion)

Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra became Grammy winners with this CD. To hear them live from Cuba, in two different programs, listen tonight and tomorrow night at 7 pm CT.
