There have been many terrific collaborations between directors and composers in motion pictures, but one of the greatest was that between director David Lean and French composer Maurice Jarre.
This week, we'll hear music from the 1984 drama, A Passage to India. It was to be David Lean's last film, and the first one he had directed in 14 years, his previous release being 1970's Ryan's Daughter.
A Passage to India was an epic based on a E.M. Forster novel written between 1912 and 1913. After the film was released, many people praised it as Lean's finest since his 1962 work, Lawrence of Arabia. A Passage to India received 11 nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Judy Davis. The Oscars it won were Best Actress in a Supporting Role to Peggy Ashcroft and Best Score to Maurice Jarre; the Academy Award was Jarre's third by 1984. Jarre also won the Golden Globe that year for best score.
