Moveable Feast: Foodie Destinations for Writers

Moveable Feast: Foodie Destinations for Writers

With 12,000 writers in the Twin Cities for the AWP (Association of Writers & Writing Programs) Conference, let's have a literary feast!

Inspired by Minnesota writers, you could take a trip to Louise Erdrich's stomping grounds. She grew up in Wahpeton, N. Dak., (just south of Fargo), and set several of her books in the area (including The Beet Queen — the title of which refers to sugar beet production in the area). In Fargo, there's the Hotel Donaldson (or 'HoDo'), which has a great trendy restaurant. Fargo is undergoing a renaissance and has a lot of new boutiques downtown plus a great new German bar Würst Bier Hall with great beer and sausages.

Laura Ingalls Wilder fans should go to southwest Minnesota and visit her museum in Walnut Grove — you can go see a sod house and eat at Nellie's Cafe.

For F. Scott Fitzgerald's St. Paul, the place to go, of course, is the historic W.A. Frost. Apparently, the author sipped soda at the counter back when it was a pharmacy.
