Four Decades, Six Strings: Jeffrey Van, Guitar (part 1)

Four Decades, Six Strings: Jeffrey Van, Guitar (part 1)

Minnesota Guitarist, Composer, and Educator Jeffrey Van is the featured artist on the next two MPR Archive on The Radio specials.

Jeffrey Van is one of the most recorded musicians in MPR's Classical Archive, with concert recordings going back as far as 1972. He has premiered more than 50 works for guitar and is a founding member of the Hill House Chamber Players, who are now in their 29th season of live concerts at the James J. Hill House in St. Paul.

Van was a lecturer in Guitar at the University of Minnesota for 40 years, and many of his students have gone on to perform and teach the instrument. His compositions and documentary scores have been featured on both NPR and PBS, as well as in performances by ensembles, orchestras and choruses nationwide.

Bill Morelock is the host and Mr. Van will be with him in the studio, contributing his personal commentary on the musical selections.

Supported in part by the Minnesota Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage fund, these programs are part of a continuing series of specials exploring the rich, 40-plus-year collection of recorded concerts selected by producer Steve Barnett from Minnesota Public Radio's Classical Archive. Program 1: The development of music for the guitar from a historical perspective, beginning in the Renaissance and continuing into the 20th century.

Program 2: Music of the 20th and 21st centuries for guitar and feature a number of Minnesota composers including Dominick Argento, Paul Fetler, Stephen Paulus and four works by Mr. Van himself.
