Rachel recently visited the new Red Wagon Pizza at 54th and Penn, in the former home of In Season. On this visit, she realized the artisan pizza scene is going like gangbusters in southwest Minneapolis.
First, there was Punch at Lake Calhoun, Mozza Mia at 50th and France, then Pizzeria Lola on Xerxes, followed by Ann Kim's Hello Pizza on France and 44th. Then, over the last couple of months a third outpost of Black Sheep opened on Nicollet, as well as Red Wagon.
They all have their slight differences: What sets Red Wagon apart is ultra thin-crusts and funky toppings — banh mi and reuben, for example — and a massive number of craft beers on tap. Plus they have a larger dessert selection, including banana cream pie in a mason jar!
