Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.

This week on Morning Glories, we'll celebrate the work of five outstanding African-American composers, in works ranging from the intimate to the unmistakably extroverted.

Monday

William Grant Still: Symphony No. 1 ("Afro-American")

Here's one of the best-known works by William Grant Still, who composed symphonies, ballet, opera, as well as working for Hollywood and musical theater.

Tuesday

Florence Price: Piano Concerto in One Movement You'll hear bold romantic inflections and virtuoso prowess on display in this concerto from 1930.

Wednesday

R. Nathaniel Dett: In the Bottoms Suite

This suite for piano evokes life in the river bottoms of the Mississippi River.

Thursday

George Walker: Lyric for Strings

This work is something of a signature piece for George Walker, the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize in music.

Friday

Scott Joplin: Treemonisha Suite

This brass suite comes from Joplin's one surviving opera, which celebrates themes of education and community.
