Roaming the rugged, wild terrain in Aspen, Colo., Performance Today host Fred Child knows he may encounter wildlife, including bears. But he probably didn't expect to run into an alumnus of Minnesota Varsity.
In Colorado to cover the 2014 Aspen Music Festival, Child happened to bump into Matt Lammers, a violinist and a 2011 Minnesota Varsity Featured Round Artist.
Originally from Eden Prairie, Minn., Lammers is now an undergraduate at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and he's spending the summer at the Aspen Music Festival and School to further his music studies. "It's legendary," Lammers tells Fred Child about Aspen. "The music here is so well-known around the country. The teachers are absolutely magnificent. I'm fortunate enough to be studying with one of the great teachers here, Paul Kantor, from Rice University."
With the cold, glacial waters of Castle Creek rushing the background, Lammers tells Fred Child about his experiences as a Minnesota Varsity participant, about his summer so far in Aspen (including an almost-sighting of a bear) and about his plans for the future.
"If music is something you really love, there's nothing like immersing yourself in it like there is here in Aspen," Lammers says. "Find a place, even if it's for a half-hour a day, to close your eyes and listen to music."
