Before composer Jeff Broadbent thinks about writing a single note of music, he determines the palette of instruments he'd like to feature in a given soundtrack.
For Dawngate, Broadbent chose to blend all the colors of a traditional orchestra along with Eastern influences like whistles, recorders, drums and metallic sounds.
To reflect the use of magic in the game, Broadbent mixed in synthesizers.
The result is a pleasing mixture of all of those elements.
Dawngate is in an open beta phase at the moment, meaning the game is playable (for free!) but still in development.
In fact, from the early days of Broadbent joining the project, he was able to play parts of the game to get a feel for the pacing and energy of Dawngate.
Broadbent says he was heavily influenced by the visuals, which he compares to the vibrant anime films of Hayao Miyazaki, whose works include such films as Spirited Away, The Wind Rises and Ponyo.
