Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.

This Tuesday, April 15, Sir Neville Marriner turns 90. On Morning Glories, we'll offer four Marriner performances with four different orchestras that the busy, versatile conductor has led during his long career.

Speaking of busy: Neville Marriner shows few signs of slowing down. His recent calendar includes appearances in Oman, Japan, and China — and of course, a big celebration in his home base of London. Happy Birthday, Sir Neville!

Monday

Libby Larsen: Symphony ("Water Music")/Minnesota Orchestra
Here's some homegrown music, from the years when Neville Marriner was music director of the Minnesota Orchestra.

Tuesday

Mozart: Symphony No. 25/Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
Marriner and the Academy are one of the great partnerships in recording history. This Mozart symphony would later be used as something of a theme song in the film Amadeus — for which Marriner and the Academy recorded the soundtrack.

Wednesday

Thomson: The River/Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
Here's another example of Marriner leading American music with an American orchestra.

Thursday

Tchaikovsky: Suite No. 4/Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra
Romantic repertoire from Stuttgart, where Marriner was chief conductor in the 1980s.

(Morning Glories will not be heard on Friday, April 18, to make way for Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion, which airs starting at 10 a.m.)
