The words "Brass Symposium" actually will raise the pulse of many music lovers! Especially those who enjoy qualities unique to brass instruments: a singing tone, combined with sheer power (i.e. sometimes they can play really loud!), plus the daredevil risk of a cracked note. It's exciting!

So you'll find plenty of excitement at the Brass Symposium at the University of Minnesota School of Music this weekend. Two public concerts with four great brass groups — Copper Street Brass; Lake Wobegon Brass Band, Sheldon Theater Brass Band, University of Minnesota Trombone Choir/Jazz Bones — in Ted Mann Concert Hall. And for the students (and serious brass geeks), there are conference sessions about how to engage communities on the way to a professional career in music.

U of M Professor of Trombone Tom Ashworth organized the event, and he stopped by to share some musical highlights with Classical MPR's John Birge.
