Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
April Fool's Day comes just at the time when we could all use a bit of levity. On Morning Glories, we'll hear five pieces reminding us that so-called "serious composers" aren't always so serious.
Monday
St. Saëns: Carnival of the Animals
The composer didn't publicize this piece during his lifetime, fearing it might damage his lofty reputation. (To add to the fun, we'll also hear the verses written for it by Ogden Nash.)
Tuesday
P. D. Q. Bach: Unbegun Symphony
Listen to this piece by the master of musical wackiness, and then stick around for our noon special, "The April Fools," with more of P. D. Q., Anna Russell, Danny Kaye, and many others.
Wednesday
Dohnanyi: Variations on a Nursery Song
This piece begins oh-so-dramatically. And then … well, you'll hear.
Thursday
Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks
Strauss's tone poem illustrates the adventures of the irrepressible medieval troublemaker.
Friday
Ibert: Divertissement
This music was originally written to accompany a stage farce. Even in the concert version, the madcap energy comes through.
