Monday
Mercadante: Flute Concerto No. 2; Patrick Gallois, flute and conductor/Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä
Saverio Mercadante (1795-1870), who was an important opera composer in his day, also wrote a series of popular flute concertos.
Tuesday
Ravel: Valses nobles et sentimentales; H J Lim, piano
Here's a new release from a young pianist who has already recorded the complete Beethoven piano sonatas.
Wednesday
Strauss: Don Juan; Manfred Honeck/Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
This year will bring us a lot of Richard Strauss, who was born 150 years ago.
Thursday
Graupner: Orchestral Suite for Viola d'Amore and Bassoon;
Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch/Finnish Baroque Orchestra
Graupner was a contemporary of Bach and Handel, whose attractive music is now being recorded more frequently.
Friday
Rutter: Suite Antique; Christopher D. Lewis, harpsichord; Kevin Mallon/West Side Chamber Orchestra
John Rutter is famous for his choral music; here's a sample of his instrumental writing.
