Last year, Classical MPR unveiled its 2012 - 13 roster of live choral concerts to a gathering of choral singers, conductors and leaders. When the name of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir was announced, there was a special feeling of shared excitement in the room.

Let us show you why. This week on Morning Glories, we'll present performances by this choir — one of the world's finest — as we look forward to its appearance in Minnesota later this month (Ticket information).

Monday

Arvo Pärt: Salve Regina

If the Choir is identified with one composer, it would be Arvo Pärt. His unique, haunting sound world has made him almost a cult figure in contemporary music.

Tuesday

Urmas Sisask: Five Songs from Gloria Patri

Another example of the remarkable musical vitality in the Baltic countries today: Estonian composer Urmas Sisask (b. 1960).

Wednesday

Jean Sibelius: Rakastava; Cyrillus Kreek: Folk Songs

Two examples of an earlier, Romantic style of choral writing, from Finland (Sibelius) and Estonia (Kreek).

Thursday

Arvo Pärt: Magnificat Antiphons

As you'll hear in this piece, Pärt often builds his pieces on repetition of the simplest harmonies.

Friday

Arvo Pärt: Dopo la vittoria

A celebratory piece, with dance-like rhythms.
