Every weekday morning at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call them Morning Glories.
It's the week of Halloween — so for Morning Glories, we're turning to the music of the night. We'll hear pieces from five composers who have treated the theme of nighttime in very different ways, with pieces that range from spooky to joyous.
Monday
Debussy: Nocturnes for Orchestra
Debussy takes the concept of the nocturne and treats it with his typical originality.
Tuesday
Schumann: Night Pieces (Nachtstucke)
Romantic composers loved to pour out their night thoughts while seated at the keyboard. Here's an example from Robert Schumann.
Wednesday
Prokofiev: Summer Nights Suite
This buoyant orchestral suite had its roots in one of Prokofiev's operas.
Thursday
Ravel: Gaspard de la Nuit
A mermaid, a scaffold, and a goblin are depicted in this fiendishly difficult piano music. Happy Halloween!
Friday
Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik
This "little night music" is Mozart's most popular serenade.
