When I spoke with clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein just after he relocated to the Twin Cities about what makes playing concertos most interesting to him, he replied "I get to be an actor."

And with music by one of the great opera composers of the 19th century, it pays to be an extrovert. Attracted to the many moods of the clarinet — which to some sounds like the human voice — Carl Maria von Weber captured both characters of the sound: the romantic yearning and the acrobatic ne'er do well. He wrote some of his finest music for the clarinet both in his operas and solo works.

Three of these make their way onto Fiterstein's new disc, an absolutely riveting rendition by this University of Minnesota professor and soloist — two concertos and then a more svelte concertino.

And Alexander Fiterstein has graciously offered a few discs to share in an online giveaway. Enter to win — and be sure to catch Alex in concert on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, in Minnetonka.
