Every weekday morning at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a stand-out work based on the theme for the week. We call them Morning Glories.
On this week's Morning Glories we're featuring new releases by young string quartets.
Monday
Antonin Dvorak: String Quartet No. 12 "American"
Simon Bolivar String Quartet
This quartet of players comes from Venezuela's famous El Sistema program, which has also given us the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and conductor Gustavo Dudamel.
Tuesday
Jennifer Higdon: An Exaltation of Larks
Lark Quartet
In this piece, Jennifer Higdon imagines the energy and the song of a multitude of birds. What better group to play it than this quartet?
Wednesday
Howard Hanson: Concerto da Camera
Ying Quartet; Adam Neiman, piano
You'll hear Howard Hanson's personal blend of romantic and modern influences in this "chamber concerto," written in 1916-17, when the composer was in his early 20s.
Thursday
Antonin Dvorak: String Quartet No. 13
Cypress String Quartet
To follow up Monday's "American" Quartet, we'll listen to the Cypress players and their all-Dvorak disc.
Friday
Ljova: Culai
Brooklyn Rider
Ljova is the composer; Culai is the nickname of the violinist Nicolae Neacsu, of the "wild and infamous Gypsy ensemble Taraf de Haidouks" - whose influence comes through loud and clear in this 2012 piece.
