Hearing the Escher String Quartet is like watching a flock of birds in flight.

At times, they move as one, then suddenly break out into individual, fragmented entities, then come together again as one. That balance of unity and independence, as well as their passion both new music and old classics, has launched them to the forefront among the world's best string quartets within a few short years.

The Escher String Quartet spent the past week in Minnesota, and between gigs in St. Paul and St. Cloud (with a visit to St. Olaf in between), they visited Classical MPR for Schubert, Zemlinsky, and conversation with MPR's John Birge.
