Each year, the Schubert Club awards over $50,000 in awards and scholarship money to student musicians. In the annual Bruce P. Carlson Student Scholarship Competition this spring, over 20 student musicians were honored with prize money for their musical talent.

The annual concert of award winners takes place Friday, April 20th at Sundin Hall at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Five scholarship winners recorded their winning performances in MPR's Maud Moon Weyerhauser Studio and are featured on the air on Classical MPR this week:

Luther Warren

Monday: Luther Warren home schools in New Brighton, Minnesota and is in 10th grade. He currently studies violin under Cheryl Stewart and recently was interviewed on Classical MPR for his win at the Minnesota Youth Symphonies concerto competition. Luther performs "Beau Soir" by Debussy and Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Opus 64, Movement III.

Tuesday: Rosalind Leavell is a graduate student at the University of Minnesota. She received her Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and is currently studying cello with Tanya Remenikova. She is performing "Requiebros" by Gaspar Cassado.

Wednesday: Sarah Knott is totally engrossed in her character when she sings opera. She is a graduate student at the University of Minnesota - Duluth and is studying voice with Elias Mokole. She will also be studying advanced vocal at the Theatre of Art Song program in Vancouver. She's singing "O mio Fernando" from Donizetti's La Favorita.

Thursday: Isaiah Grose picked up the guitar at the age of 4 simply because he wanted to be like his father, who also plays guitar. He comes from a musical family and is in 10th grade at Monticello High School. He is currently studying guitar with Dr. James Flegel at MacPhail Center for Music. Isaiah is playing Gavottes 1 and 2 from JS Bach's Suite No. 6.

Friday: Chelsea Wang has been winning awards for years. Besides performing on piano with the Fort Worth Symphony, New Orleans Civic Symphony, the Des Moines Symphony and the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, Chelsea also appeared on the radio program "From the Top" with Christopher O'Riley. She is currently a senior at Valley High School in Des Moines and is studying with Ksenia Nosikova at the University of Iowa. She is performing Variations, Opus 41 by Nikolai Kapustin.
