Although cellist Joe Johnson may have spent the last few years playing for a far-flung range of ensembles such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Fe Opera and the Honolulu Symphony, he honed his superb talent with over a decade in the Twin Cities classical music community. A longtime member of the Minnesota Orchestra, he also founded local ensembles such as the Prospect Park Players and the Minneapolis Quartet.

He recently returned to the Twin Cities, a place with a very special personal meaning to him, to record a CD of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich cello sonatas with pianist Victor Asuncion at Hamline University's Sundin Music Hall. Asuncion has been playing for major ensembles and performing in many of the world's most prestigious venues since his debut at the age of 18.

Johnson and Asuncion will return to the Twin Cities for a performance at Sundin Music Hall this Friday night, with a program featuring pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven, Benjamin Britten and Johannes Brahms. More information about the event is available here.

In anticipation of Johnson's return to the Twin Cities for this performance as well as the release of his new CD, Classical MPR is proud to offer five free MP3 downloads from the CD.
