Avery Fisher Hall to become David Geffen Hall

Avery Fisher Hall, the longstanding home of the New York Philharmonic, will become David Geffen Hall this September. The name change is the result of a $100 million gift by Geffen, a media magnate who's the "G" in the Dreamworks SKG partnership with Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Last fall, Lincoln Center made waves across the philanthropic world when it took the bold step of essentially returning the donation made by the late Avery Fisher so as to have the freedom to pursue a naming-caliber donation from a donor with even deeper pockets.

Geffen's donation will help to underwrite a $500 million renovation of Avery Fisher—whoops, make that David Geffen Hall, scheduled to begin in 2019.
